It's possible to get good quality photos with any modern camera on the market. However, some of the SLR cameras on the market yield some stunning results. (See the Gallery for examples).

On the High end ($1000 +), 2 current recommendations are

  1. Nikon D80 with Macro lens
  2. Canon Digital Rebel with Macro lens

Smackdown! For a showdown of features between the Nikon and Canon, see this article from CNET.com, which is a leading web site specializing in digital gadgets of all kinds. (It also happens to be where Ned, the author of this page, works...) Hint...the Nikon D80 wins hands-down.

For the Mid-Range ($500 and under) recommendations are coming. In general we have found that Nikon cameras seem to have the sharpest, consistent focus and color.

Digital Editing

Once you take pictures with your camera, you will need to crop, resize, and possibly touch them up on your computer prior to posting on the web. There are many choices for digital editing, ranging from free software, to expensive packages that cost several hundred dollars. Additionally most cameras will come with some proprietary free software. If you just want a free utility, that will do the trick, the internet's most popular is IrfanView. If you want to know more, Download.com has a great list of the most common packages. The top 5 are listed below.
